The El Paso de Robles Youth Correctional Facility is on 170 acres in the northern part of San Luis Obispo County. The facility was opened in 1947 as the Paso Robles School for Boys, the first institution built by the California Youth Authority. The age range of the wards assigned is 16 through 19.

Over half of the school's population attends competency-based remedial and high school educational classes. Accredited classes for junior college credit, through Cuesta Community College, are also conducted on institutional grounds. All wards are taught employability skills. The goal is to prepare them for their return to the community. All living units at the institution interface this concept with small-group counseling and community living, schooling and work experience.

There are several community-oriented programs in which the wards are involved, such as the M-2 Sponsors Program and a public service work crew. The programs offer the wards a broad and stable base from which they can develop friends, support groups and contacts that will assist them to behave in a more normal and acceptable manner as they get closer to release on parole.

The Los Robles Forestry Camp has become very well known and respected, not only for its community assistance projects, but for its efficiency and diligence in fighting fires throughout the state, their first-class rugby team, and a scuba diving team.
